What To Do When a Pipe Bursts
By HomeAssist Connect Editorial Team ·
Short answer: Shut off your main water valve first. Then cut power to any area where water is near outlets or appliances, open faucets to drain the lines, and start removing water. Call a plumber once the flow is stopped.
1. Shut off the main water valve
In many Houston-area homes the main shut-off is in a box near the curb by the water meter, or on a valve where the line enters the house — often in the garage. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
2. Make the area safe
If water is near outlets, cords or appliances, turn off power to that area at the breaker panel — but only if you can reach the panel without standing in water.
3. Drain the lines and limit damage
- Open cold faucets at the lowest point of the home to drain remaining water.
- Turn off the water heater (power or gas to pilot).
- Move furniture and valuables, and start mopping or using a wet vac.
- Take photos and video for insurance records.
4. Call a plumber
Describe where the pipe broke and what you've shut off. During freezes, many homes are affected at once, so availability may be limited.
